mulching with fig branches?

We just moved to a property with 10 large and very productive fig trees (one is 20 feet around!), and we are going to remove 3 trees and heavily prune others. We need to add compost and mulch to all of our trees, and we are wondering if we can chip the branches and use them to mulch around the other figs? Or can we compost the branches and leaves in our general compost pile?
We've heard/read that the sap and leaves can inhibit growth of other plants around a fig, but we haven't been able to find any information about mulching the branches. We are thinking that it may be fine to use as mulch around the figs only, and we should avoid composting large qualities. Thanks for advice!
