OK here's another idea (for those reading and interested). Right after I posted this (and without my bringing up the topic) my DH said he wanted to donate to Salvation Army in Haiti because they have an ongoing mission there and were on the ground and helping with generators.

They have always been one of our favorites so that was a no-brainer.

Publix will take donations, too.

Care and Doctors Without Borders/MSF also have important missions in Haiti. Both stay through thick and thin, whether the country is in crisis or not. (I'm partial to Care because they once let me sleep on the floor of their warehouse after the floods of 2004, when all the hotels in Gonaives were full of mud.)
The organizations on the ground right now are struggling to deal with their own losses while doing their best to help Haitians. Doctors Without Borders had treated 1,000 people in it's parking lots and courtyards by the end of the day yesterday because one office was totally destroyed and the others were unsafe.
