Orlando Mayhem...

...sounds like the caption that should appear on a picture of me after a day of trimming back all the frost bitten plants in my yard. But, it's more than just that.

The Orlando Mayhem are our very own women's full contact football team (football, not soccer). They are part of the Independent Women's Football League. Yes, they wear pads and helmets. Yes, they are good. No, this is not flag football or powder-puff football. This group of ladies, ranging in age from mid-40s to just graduated from high school, was South Atlantic Division Champion last year with a record of 7 wins, 1 loss. At the end of the 2008 regular season, the Mayhem had the honor of traveling to Pittsburgh, PA to participate in the playoffs. They were defeated in the playoff, but did not lose their love of the game.

Recently, Hometown Clermont Magazine included a lovely article about the team, with interviews of some of the players, describing how economic changes have forced them to move their home field to East Ridge High School in Clermont. If you had the opportunity to read the magazine article, you would have learned that the team includes mothers, grandmothers, school teachers, social workers, carpenters and other laborers, college students, models, law enforcement officers, attorneys and other professionals. These ladies play for love of the sport, not money, and could use some support from the community.

Football in what is normally "off season"? Yes! Can these ladies actually play ball? YES! Attending one of the games is an inexpensive way to entertain and spend time with family, to show community support for these hard working dedicated ladies, and to help boost your local economy.

The season starts April 11, with a home game (at East Ridge High School in Clermont) against the Miami Fury. Additional home games are April 25 vs Houston Energy, May 30 vs Palm Beach Punishers and June 13 vs Atlanta Explosion. Tickets are usually $10 per person per game, but I am able to get tickets at 2 for $10 - which is great on its own, but these tickets will include entering your name into the team's May Madness drawing, with chances to win money each day in the month of May. If you are interested in buying tickets, you can contact me via email through GardenWeb.

If you want to read more about the Orlando Mayhem, you can check out the team website here, or visit the League website here.

Please contact me if you would like to take advantage of the special reduced ticket price or if you would just like to show your support by making a donation to the team. I am a volunteer supporter and fundraiser with friends on the team. If you need more information or know anyone interested in playing, please contact me.
