TV and Movies for Plant Watching

Yes, I confess to having spent an unaceptable amount of the second Pirates of The Caribbean movie watching plants, but hands down, the best plant porn on the tube has to be in the TV show Lost.

But the garden they are putting in there is a joke. I keep wanting to fuss at them about it.

I love it when I see a show and they have something growing that you know couldn't possibly grow in that location. Some of the travel shows, though, have really beautiful plants.

I sat through an entire "Lord of the Rings" just to see the cottage garden at the end.

there was a short glimpse of a neat cottage garden with lots of coneflowers in the Polanski version of Oliver Twist.

Lots of times those sci-fi/flying-saucer movies from the fifties have cool desert garden sets. I can't rememmber any titles, but there were several. If I remember right there was desert garden in the Ang Lee version of the Hulk, probably a "quote" from an earlier sci-fi movie. Sci-fi in general, but especially old sci-fi, has good garden sets.

"I Walked with a Zombie" (1943) has great Caribean/tropical mood sets. Lots of bahama shutters, patios of stones with grass growing in between, and moonlit tropical plants.

For Florida swamps, the horrible old "Frogs," was filmed just south of Naples.

    Amber,
I notice what you are saying about Lost.

    Coffemom,
    I agree.

Anybody else watching "Planet Earth" on Discovery channel this week? Amazing nature photography. Not exactly gardens but definitely natural. Really beautiful photography.

There's a mystery on PBS called "Rosemary and Thyme" about 2 gardeners who seem to have murders committed where ever they show up. (Worse than Jessica Fletcher/ murder she wrote)Alot of the show is filmed in the English gardens but last week they were somewhere more tropical mediterranean. It was beautiful....and 2 people died. Gardening is so untidy.

Untidy, yes. But what other hobby gives you so many opportunities to bury the evidence? ;~)

It's probably not exactly a plant watching movie, but has anyone seen The Constant Gardener?? Any good??

I haven't yet, but "The Serpent's Kiss," with Ewen McGregor IS about a gardener.

But this season's garden porn movie was deffinately "Pirated os the Carabean III."

My love for tropical plants started when I watched Fantasy Island. I was a kid growing up in snowy WI longing for the warmth and colors of the tropics.

Bren, that makes so much sence. You have a very resort looking landscaping.
My love came from Tarzan movies and books. I am trying for a jungle in my back yard. I want you to have to move branches to get though areas, I want vines hanging down, and most of all, I want a brawny man to...never mind. I like jungle.

We watched "Apocolypto" last night. The Mayan history was a joke, that poison dart frog sure didn't LOOK like a poison dart frog, and it was hugely gory, but the plant porn was wonderful!

These aren;t movies but I like how they use plants on the shows: Will and Grace (Will's terrace and the Ficus Lyrata in the hallway) and Two and a Half Men (Charlie's House has lots inside and out).

Now that you mention it, why aren't there any TV shows that include somebody doing some gardening?!?!? Even if it was a container garden or a little orchid house.

Oh, another show comes to mind, Brothers and Sisters.

We watched "Greenfingers" tonight, and it's absolute British garden porn. Rich soil, beautiful gardens...you will be oooohing and aaaahing all the way though.
