TV shows for FALL

solstice98

It's about time for the new shows to start popping up. Anything you are interested in or looking forward to?

I've got my sights on a new vampire show on HBO and, of course, the return of Heros and Survivor.

What else looks good?

Kate

I quit watching t.v. about a year ago. I watch reruns and what new shows I can find online. I just got through watching all four years and the two movies of The Pretender, and now I'm working on Charmed (8 seasons, so that will take awhile).

I used to love Desperate Housewives, but I missed so many when I was working nights. If I can find a place to watch it all again from the get-go, that would be fun.

Does anyone know if Lipstick Jungle will be on again this year? That was a great show!

The vampire show looks good. I bought my dd the Twilight series of books and I ended up reading them all too lol-so anything with vampires is good with me right now! BTW the Twilight movie comes out in December my dd has the advertisement on her screensaver LOL!

I'm reading the Twilight series and loving it. I'm on book 2 and have book 3 waiting.
The Sookie Stackhouse series that True Blood on HBO is based on is good too. Sillier and more fun characters than the Twilight series. I like them both but like the 2 main characters in the Twilight books better.
I read a lot of sci fi but Marcia got me started on the vampire thing. Judging by TV, bookstores and movies, lots of people on are on a vampire kick right now!

Smallville, the Office, Prison Break, that's about it.
I don't have cable!! Rabbit ears for us and movies from the small biz movie store is how we get by.

Yeah, a couple of us have been exchanging emails about that today. Should have expected that from the director of 6 Feet Under but it still seemed overly gratuitous. But the story was true to the book and I liked most of the characterizations.

House, Grey's Anatomy and probably sinking into the new 90210. I also like Medium.

A show you should watch on DVD is Alias.

Fringe was pretty good. Did you watch HOle in The Wall that was on after it? I laughed like crazy. What a silly show, but it was good for a laugh.

I'm waiting for Heroes, too. And Lost. DH is watching Prison Break.

On the True Blood topic...I was so excited about Sookie coming to TV, and I have never been more disappointed in a book-turned-movie/tv show in my life. As Kate knows, I was unhappy with most of the character changes from the get-go, and any semblance to the books has pretty much been lost now, after Episode 5. I absolutely hate what they have done with my charming little vamp books. The show has none of the humor, and the only character true to what he is in the books seems to be Eric, the Viking Vampire. He's perfect, so far, but if the rest of what they have done is anything to go by, he won't be true to his book character, either.

The gratuitous sex is over the top, and Jason, who is a relatively minor character in the books, gets about 30 minutes out of every hour. Poor Sookie, who is the star of the books (everything is told by her, first person, and she's in every scene) has less screen time than anyone.

What a sad development! It could have been SO good.

Other than that, the only Prime Time show I watch with any regularity is Pushing Daisies, which I think is brilliant. The writing is wittier than anything I've ever seen, and I'm surprised it came back, for that reason. It's too clever for Prime Time, by far.

I do like So You Think You Can Dance, but I have to wait until next summer for that. Trying to make do with Dancing With The Stars, but I've never seen a worse group of contestants since the show started. Mostly, I stick to Forensic Files and HGTV. And now that I'm hating True Blood, I won't even have that little bit of escape. So I'm re-reading the books, instead.

Twilight actually has a November release date, btw, and I can't wait to see if they do better with it than they did with True Blood. I sure hope so. The novels were great!

Marcia, I totally agree about TrueBlood. Huge disappointment.

Heroes has come back very strong and I'm enjoying that a lot.

Sanctuary is the most fun new show of the season.

I'm a Survivor junkie and so I'm glad it's back but I've never seen so many worthless people in the series before. Even host Jeff seems disgusted with them. I was liking Matty but he blew it this week.

I watch Life on Mars last night and loved it. The British series was good - I caught some of that on BBC America - and this script is almost identical. But the 1973 scenes of New York, with the Twin Towers still intact and hippies lining the streets, were awesome. The music is perfect. If you haven't watched it, give it a try.

Grey's Anatomy has been a guilty pleasure for several years now, it's not the kind of show I usually watch but I know all the characters and story lines so I'm hooked.

    Other silly shows I like:
Super Nanny (I LOVE Jo Jo!)
    Wife Swap
    Ugly Betty

And I also am addicted to:
    Dirty Jobs
    Dog the Bounty Hunter
    Mythbusters
It's me or the Dog (Animal Planet)

    REVISION ALERT!!

Okay, after all my complaining and yelling and shaking my fist at the sky, I have suddenly realized I am completely and hopelessly addicted to True Blood after all! Haha! I'm probably deranged, and there are large parts of the show that I purely HATE...but the parts I like, I LOVE, and I love them so much, I can overlook the crap stuff! I'm doomed to watch it all every Sunday night, and then to RE-watch the good bits throughout the week, fast forwarding past the graphic sex scenes with characters I hate, and going straight to the scenes with Vampire Bill and Sookie, which I love. I'm officially now a Vampire Bill Junkie!

Funny thing, my daughter-in-law called me the other day to tell me exactly the same thing. She's hooked. It's a disease, and I guess she and I will enable each other! Well, and several of my friends who are into it as well. My husband doesn't get it, and frankly, I'm not sure I do, either. But that's the way it is!

OMG you guys, I just found this thread & I am sooo hooked on True Blood, too. Everything stops on Sunday s at 9pm so I can watch. The folks on HBO.com boards are worse, though.

Marcia, I also watch the episodes all week, & have read all the books. My hubby thinks I'm totally nuts. He can't say much as he's hooked on deer hunting in GA every other weekend for the next 3 months. My oldest daughter is also hooked, so I have her to talk to about it.

My DD and I are both hooked too. The guys in our house all go in the other room when it is on and roll thier eyes lol! Geez, I though Jake was gonna be a werewolf, so now he's a dog? LOL

  • solstice98
    Original Author

No, Sam's a dog, when he wants to be. Jason maybe a dog in some ways (LOL) but he's not a dog in the supernatural sense. He is something else, but not 'til later in the story.

    Kate

  • sultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish)

Lmao!! Okay I'm getting mixed up werewolves with dogs and Sam (True Blood) and Jacob/Jake (Twilight) who is a werewolf!
My dd started reading the House of Night Series, more vampires but more like a vampirish knockoff of Harry Potter (vampire school), teenybopper style! I started reading the first one she finished with.

Jason is most definitely a dog lol. Oh that is such a tease, now I gotta find out what he *really* is.
That's it! I am going to go buy all those Sookie books now I'm tired of waiting for the stupid show that cuts you off at the good parts and makes you wait a week lol.

You'll find that the show has only loosely followed the 1st book. I think you'll like the books even more and now that you've gotten hooked on the characters you'll want to read all of the books! Enjoy!!!

  • manature

I agree with Kate. The books are much better...better plot lines, better and more interesting characters. Less time spent on gratuitous sex scenes, and lots more humor.

I love the show, for the good bits, but the books are a pure delight all the way through each and every one. Except for the two focusing on Quinn. Kate is waiting eagerly for those, but I can't stand that guy. Not the one in the books, nor the one he was based on. Yuck for me.

Jason is repellent, both in the books (though we don't have to spend any real time with him there) and on the show. And this hippie chick girlfriend is totally made up and revolting. If I have to watch one more endless scene of them drifting around in the tangerine sky, I might have to give up on the show!! Who knew one organic almond could send you on such a trip!

More Bill and Sookie. More Eric, Pam, and Fangtasia. Less graphic sex. Less Lafayette, much less Tara, NO MORE VOODOO crap (can't they write a show about Louisiana without a voodoo woman?), and NO MORE JASON at all. I'm longing for him to end up drained in a ditch somewhere.

Ooops. Sorry. Guess I got a bit carried away. But this show can do that to me. This last episode had some wonderful bits...Bill playing Wii golf? Hahaha. Eric handing out flyers for Fangtasia...Eric in flip-flops and a wife-beater? And some great one-liners! ("You have vampire in your cleavage?") But I have to fast forward
    through the other stuff.

Still...I'm loving Bill so much...and Eric stretched out in a bathtub is a work of ART. Guess I'll keep watching for now.

This thread got me to go watch the True Blood episodes on demand and now I am hooked. Who is the author of the True Blood books and what are they called? Also, how many are there?

  • jollyjp

Charlain Harris is the author & there are 8 Sookie Stackhouse books at the moment. A 9th one is due out early next year. Got all mine at Amazon.

Charlaine Harris writes wonderfully. The books are not "literature," but they are so much fun to read. And she has a gift for making the impossible seem completely real. They must be read in order, though. Here's the list:

    1. Dead Until Dark
    2. Living Dead In Dallas
    3. Club Dead
    4. Dead To The World
    5. Dead As A Doornail
    6. Definitely Dead
    7. All Together Dead
    8. From Dead To Worse

If you read them out of order, a lot of things will be spoiled and/or make no sense.

    Hope you enjoy them!

Heroes is great! Fringe, not bad, will keep watching. BBC America has some good shows. New Ninja Warrior started this past week on G4. Fill in with HGTV or give up, turn it off and read. I'm reading the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. I'm up to book 4.

Did anyone go see the Twilight movie yet? I prob wouldnt bother because I am afraid they are gonna butcher it but my dd is begging me to take her so we will prob see it this week.

I bought the first 3 sookie stackhouse books at walmart, they are only 5 dollars and something ea. there, pretty cheap! I started the first one and keep comparing it in my mind to what has happened on the show LOL! Wish I would have read it first...

A friend of mine watches the Sons of Anarchy show about a biker gang that runs guns but doesn't want any drugs in thier town and has the law inforcement involved in thier dirty dealing. Of course they sell these guns to the drug dealers in the other gangs *shrugs*-don't get that part* She has got me watching the reruns now. It has Katey Sagal (Peg, from Married With Children) in it as the mother and wife of some of the gangster members. She is actually pretty good in that role as a love-to-hate-her 'biker babe' LOL. It also has Adriana La Cerva from the Sopranos playing the soon-to-be or not-soon-to-be x-wife of one of the gangsters. But that may be revealed in the next episode lol.

It's going to be a busy night for the recorders and TIVO!
First it's Amazing Race, then the season ender for True Blood, then Colbert's Christmas Special (certain to be stranger-than-strange). And at the same time, Jack Bauer (24) is finally back!!! Guess I better make some popcorn and find a cozy quilt for the sofa. Looks like we'll be spending the evening in front of the TV.

I went and saw Twilight today with dd. If you didn't read the book you prob. wouldn't know what was going on in some parts of the movie. DH went with us and he was kinda lost on some parts of it lol. Of course they butchered the movie and I expected that. Some parts were pretty good and followed the book. Many of the characters were not in keeping with the book's either. I think I'd have waited for the dvd rental release if dd hadn't wanted to see it so bad. Awww well..

"Fringe" is ok sometimes. "Lie To Me" is really good. I'm really digging that show.

Been seeing lots of reruns of Matlock lately. A favorite old show of mine.
