Most veggies need a lot of direct sun, but benefit from some shade in the brutally hot afternoons. Cool-season veggies are better suited to semi-shady conditions (e.g., leaf veggies, brassicas, herbs). Forget corn, slicing tomatoes (cherry varieties might work), beans, peas, peppers, or cukes. They need sun all day in my experience. What are you wanting to grow?

I beg to differ regarding the cukes, I've had better than fair success with certain greenhouse cultivars in filtered sun/shade as long as the containers are not subjected to afternoon sun/heat. Certain cukes CAN do well in shade, Cool Breeze, Corentine, Corinto and Sweet Success come to mind ;-)
