I saw this link on another forum, and I was really intrigued.
Aside from the sheer beauty of these specimens, one of the things that fascinated me about the bonsai chiles was that it's easy to turn a "bonchi" back into a regular production plant again by just replanting it in a larger container. So one could use bonsai techniques as a beautiful way to overwinter chiles and even get some small crops indoors in the winter.
The main reason that I have never overwintered chiles is that I don't have room for a big pepper plant indoors. But I could probably make room for a couple of bonchis on the shelving unit where I start my seedlings. It seems they'd be way ahead of seedling peppers for starting production. But I'd guess this only works well for the smaller-fruited chiles - not bells or other big peppers.
I may give this a try next fall. Has anyone else grown pepper plants as bonsai?
