Maybe pokeweed (Phytolacca americana)? I have it in my PA garden.

pulling wont work.. unless you get ALL the root ..

a babe in spring will most likely pull out...

but if it is from last season ... you might wnat to loosen the soil.. before pulling

That sure reminds me of Four O'clock foliage. Seedlings pop up if there's any nearby.

I yank 'em out at this size.

4 o'clocks here have shorter, darker, smoother leaves...

I vote for pokeweed

I dug up a pokeweed from the lot next to me and the root was quite large. While I do not have a problem with the plant itself, the one I dug up was in the 'wrong place' and stuck out like a sore thumb. It is my understanding that in Europe, some people consider Pokeweed to be a desirable exotic. The purplish-red color of the stem is interesting. It dies back to roots after a frost but comes back the next spring with renewed vigor. Birds love the berries and they will reseed the plant around your yard for you, but as Ken Adrian mentioned, the younger ones are easy to remove. If you keep the pokeweed in your yard, do not let it grow near your driveway or the birds could end up 'reseeding' it all over your car.
