If you cut or break off a branch of a healthy Plumeria it will grow back usually with 3 new branches. I have never tried it on a single stalk. They never make it much more than 2 feet before branching out. You might want to ask on the Plumeria forum before trying it.

Now's the time to cut them back. We did in early December. Will get multiple shoots! Dry the canes you cut till April or so in a dry warm place, replant and by summer ya have a bunch!

They will do good in a pot and probably get more attention.
You can fertilize with MG in the spring and that will help with the growth and branching. Usually they don't branch until they flower but you can cut about a foot off to get them to branch. Just make sure to cut on an angle. Good luck!
