Lee County FL Gardeners Lakes Park Botanical Gardens

Hi, I've posted here infrequently over the years, but I "lurk" here often. I think many from SW Florida will be interested in the Lakes Park Enrichment Foundation's Community Garden and plans for Botanical Gardens.

Saturday I helped 3 volunteers fill some of the garden plots in the community garden with really great topsoil that has been donated by a local source. The plots are just starting to fill and I took one yesterday. It is a great project worth promoting and participating in.

Next Saturday is a kick-off (also coinciding with the first week of high season). Plant sale in the fragrance garden (don't know how great it will be yet) events for kids, etc.

There is a link to the botanical garden layout at the foundation's website.

I'm going to try to plant my garden plot this week. Just a little 4X8 space.

This sounds really nice. The article said $50 a year is that for your 4X8 space? Whats the next step to reserving one?

There is a signup page on the Lakes Park Enrichment site. I signed up online. The $50 is annual and it is a donation to the Enrichment Foundation. It gives you your 4X8 plot, filled with great soil. Hoses and water are close to the plots. The garden is locked but members know the combination. There is a gardener available for help.

I think local Garden Web members should consider this project.

Wait until you hear about their plans for a botanical garden...$50 million needs to be raised and it will put Naples Botanical and Marie Selby to shame, at least I hope so. I plan to be very active in this. You can also email gardenplots@leegov.com for any information. I think if you can stop by this Saturday for the garden fest, you will be able to sign up in person. I am very new to the group so this is just my understanding.

I would love to visit this Botanical Garden someday. Keep us updated when the gardens are at their best.

They are trying to create a botanical garden in Punta Gorda, but I am sure it won't be the size of Lakes Park.
