Cape Honeysuckle, Devil's Backbone, Blue Porterweed, and Bulbine will work. Sweet Almond Bush is supposed to be draught tolerant, but mine needed regular watering to get started, now does not need much care.

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (Brunfelsia) is a beautiful ornamental shrub. Pictures of mine are about half way down in the thread linked below.

Is the brunselfia autonomous once it's established?

I can't speak directly to it because mine are both foundation plants. When we get an long hard overnight freeze here in Jacksonville (28 or below, for 6-8 hours), they defoliate but shoot out new leaves within about 1-2 weeks. I do believe brunfelsia are considered tropicals so they may not be a good choice.

You don't mention sun or shade. I always vote for camellias if you have pine tree shade. They love shifting shade and acidic soil.
