What heat source to use when covering trees

Following some suggstions online I draped my mango tree with those big C9 Christmas lights in hopes that when I put a sheet over the tree, it would generate enough heat to keep it warm in there.

Well, a few weeks ago when it hit 32 degrees just south of Orlando, frost formed on the sheet and froze through it, leaving me with some freeze-burned leaves.

Frost did not form on any of the leaves of my other (uncovered) trees, just on the ground. This leads me to believe that the covering actually CAUSED the freeze burn on the leaves and if I hadn't covered it, it would have been fine.

So where is my error? The minor freeze burn isn't a big deal, but if weather gets a little colder, I want to know I'm potecting it properly. Is a sheet not thick enough? My tree is small, so I didn't want something heavy. Or are those Christmas lights just garbage at generating heat? (i felt one that had been on a long time and it felt as cold as the weather)

Thanks in advance.
