bananas fruiting half way

My neighbor has a healthy seeming clump of bananas plants in western exposure. She has two bunches of the small and sweet bananas, but both seem to die off at the bottom half.

The end halves just shriveled up are black/brown. Her bananas last year did the same thing.

It seems that something is not right, either exposure or nutrients.

Any ideas? I can post photos tomorrow, if you'd like.

Photos might help. Did the bananas get yellow before they shriveled? I am sure you know bananas ripen really quickly once they start turning color.
