pruning tropical fruit trees (mango, avocado, jackfruit)

i've heard two different nursery directors talk about a "new" way of pruning fruit trees for the home garden. basically the idea is to keep them small (just above head height & bushy), and seperate them by 9' for root growth. For obvious reasons this sounds intriguing, but I can't find anything on this technique, let alone applied to mangos, avocado, or jackfruit

Do you all have resources for training and pruning this fruit trees to stay small and plentiful?
