The two favorite trees in my yard are the silk floss (which has grown well but never bloomed) and the tipuana tipu (huge, beautiful, and a traffic-stopper when it's covered with yellow flowers). Both were planted in 2005 after Charley blew out the laurel oaks. We're still in trouble with the HOA for using 'non-approved' trees ;~))

wallisadi, what the Hell? I don't know if I would want that stickery thing in my yard. Is that the way the trunks get when they get big?

Always thought the Silk Floss tree would make an awesome bonsai.

I am a cassia collector. I have the rainbow showers cassia, the bakeriana, the roxburghii, a bifurcata, and a bahamian (i think). if anyone knows where i can score a white one (queens hospital), please let me know.

i have a rainbow eucaluptus and a royal poinciana.

i also have a princess earrings "tree".

I did have a african tulip tree, but chopped it down this year. grew EXTREMELY fast. 35' in two years, but defoliated at 36 degrees. this plant was never going to bloom in st. pete, so i removed it. I have seen one literally on the coast in sarasota in bloom.

Wallisadi,
You must live in a warmer part of DeLand than I. My Silk Floss froze last year, which was nothing compared to the freeze we just experienced. I have a Tipu tipuana that is in a large container where I left it to see if would survive a winter here. I think it passed the test. I have a caesalpinia pulcherrima which usually comes back quickly and a bauhinia x blakeiana which looks "iffy" right now. My jacarandas (young trees) look badly damaged. When we came back to Fl to stay in 1970, we stopped one zone to soon. :>(

Hi
Have a couple on the above lists as well as a white form of the Royal poinciana or at least reputed to be has not flowered yet. Schizolobium parahyba, jury still out if it's "cool"lol. has grown more in the last year than the previous 5. Catches lizards in a sticky resin, which I can find no info about. Throws entire branches off at once with a loud popping sound.lol Breaks in 30 MPH winds.
Thinking of removing it as can't imagine a tree that size in a hurricane . was hoping to see at least one flower before then.
laurroxie
Ever got the C roxburghii to flower?? Both it and th Schizy seem to have made it through the cold but look a bit ragged. I think both are "spring" flowers?? gary

I forgot the lance pod, that flower in the fall and the princess earing tree. I am sure there are more that I forgot. Oh I have an Afrian tulip, but I don't know if it will survive, it lost a lot of bark.

On silk floss trees: most are 'armored' with all those spikes from the time they are small. Some are not but it makes them less desirable. I planted mine where my neighbor's teenage son used to park with the wheels of his truck up on my curb. He doesn't do it anymore!
Cliff, I don't think they would be great bonsai because they grow straight up, very tall, with no branching except right at the crown. But the trunks do look awesome!

As silk floss trees grow older the spikes fall off the bark becomes smooth its only scary on younger trees. I lost all of my silk floss trees in Hurricane Wilma, they are not very wind-resistant.

So, WHERE are all the pictures? So far all I've seen is a tree I would not want to climb. What's that old saying, worth a THOUSAND words ;-)

I like trees I can eat!I have Pigeon Pea,(Peas)
Kafir Lime(edible leaves and I zest the skins and dry for flavoring)
Allspice(I use the leaves in my Jerk Paste and add to the smoker when jerking chicken)

There is a silk floss at EPCOT by Mexico that must be 60 feet tall. It's still heavily armored. Until windy 2004, there was a huge one at Leu Gardens - not as tall as Disney's but much bigger around - that still had it's spikes too. I wonder if some environmental stresses might cause them to drop the spikes?
