I am in Lakeland, so about where you are. I started first seeds Jan 1st. Gone... Started some Jan 10, some survived. Started more late Jan, still alive. They are all outside now. I covered with plastic when we had these heavy rains. Just start some more, and keep starting every week. Some will survive, just the numbers game.

HEY NEIGHBOR, I am in Auburndale just off K-VILLE ROAD. I made the mistake of starting the majority of my seeds the first time. DUMB! But this is my first time growing from seed. So I started more a few 2days ago, but no tomatoes. I started broccoli, egg plant, cukes[2], mini gourds and okra. I learned not to put all my seeds in one planting, lol. I will keep trying..I planted then in little plastic dixi cups and then transfered them to my single bucket self watering set ups. Last night and tonite they are inside. I did leave my potatoe/walmart bags hanging off my porch railing. Since they were only started Saturday. |

Just in case you don't know, even if the tomatoes get too tall you can just plant them deeper. The hairs on the stems will make roots. It's the one plant you can't plant too deep. Might even be a good thing in the summer for them to find water when it's dry. BTW, I have the same problem with seeds. :o)

Don't be frustrated :-) just consider it all a learning experience. I've learned to keep my seedlings close to the door so I don't forget them when night/cold comes. I can be forgetful too. Sorry about your losses. The main reason I don't start all my seeds in one go is I end up with WAY too many plants and don't have the heart to kill them. So I usually start no more than 6 seeds of each name. If I have a total loss I start over or buy plants. Good luck. Keep growing. Denise |

Try Publix. Always fresh, no waiting for them to grow, fair prices, and if you really get frustrated, you can buy ketchup.

Well if you don't want gas "ripened" tomatoes I would avoid Publix. At this point I would buy tomato plants. My local Target has some nice ones for $1.39 (a lot less than you would pay for one serving at Publix). I also have a local produce market that has beautiful, inexpensive, tomato plants. Don't be too hard on yourself, this has been a really tough year. Oh and I agree, in the future, scraggly plants are great if you bury them deep. You can bury 80%. Michelle

This winter is terrible isn't it? So wet and cold. I have my seedling in little 3.5 inch pots. I put the pots in a tray so I can move them around. On sunny days I put them in the yard and move them to the porch if it gets cold or rainy. It is easier to remember and move them if they are all on a tray near your front entrance. If you saved some seed you might try a few again now. If you want to buy plants I would wait until this crappy weather is gone. Let Target take care of them for you until it warms up.

My favorite nursery carries six-packs of six inch tall tomato sets for $1.45. Find a local non-BigBox nursery and buy some reasonably priced sets. Sure, you don't get to start the exotic varieties you wanted to try, but the staples that do well in our environment are always there.... Tom

My situation is worse. My plans - about 20 of them were fruiting, They got hit by disease (small brown/black spot on leaves). They are all dying from the lower leaves coming to the top. It is a sad sight. Sad enough to make a grown man cry - sniff; sniff.

Jay, where you looking for the sour tomatoes? I have seeds for you that somebody sent me. I can't contact you through GW, you will have to send me an email and let me know if you still want those seeds. Put sour tomatoes in the subject line so I know it is you. Silvia

John, you rascal, where the heck you been? I know we're not supposed to name Nurseries here but look for something close to the 4900 block of of 49th St N. I only say 49-49 because it's easy to remember...a horse and buggy are out front ;-) Tom

Hi Denise, if it's not done too frequently it's not a problem. I always try to make sure I'm don't plug anything too frequently or it might be construed as a commercial interest, which will get you banned. I have no interest here other than helping folks and receiving help, but I also don't want to take the chance of getting in trouble with our hosts ;-) Tom
RE: I AM FRUSTRATED with my tomatoes

Tom, I name nurseries too and we've had several threads with people listing their favorite local places. I don't think it's a problem unless, as you say, it's an obvious plug by the nursery owner. Anyway, I've never been sent to Disney for it. Kate

I hardly ever start seeds even in centra Florida until mid Feb as my father always said you never plant them outside until after Easter as generally the last cold snap is then. I know south Florida is different. I am glad I heeded his advice other than the few I have growing outside in a rotected container that is tented and heated on cold nights such as tonight. I always have beautiful tomatoes and the plants are ready to go out on schedule. I have seeds coming up now and they are in medium size pots with starter mix on top of the soli so they can have good roots by the time they hit they home spot. Linda

RE: I AM FRUSTRATED with my tomatoes

tom, I go there a lot, but they sell 4 packs for 1.49,thought you might have another place. We bought a house(abouta half mile from where we lived) and haven't been posting for awhile, just reading posts. We'll have to get together when the weather gets better. Hope to get some plumeria cuttings from you again, lost some of mine thanks to global warming, or is it climate change, or was it a weather event. john |

Hi Smittee and the group, sorry to read you are having trouble. I'm also in zone 9 and one of the tricks I have found that really helps is to use large 5 inch square pots. I find I can pick up four pots in each hand by pinching the corner where the four pots meet. This makes it fast and easy to move the starts. Look for a weather forecast of 42F or lower with light wind and clear sky. If this is a case MOVE THEM INSIDE FOR THE NIGHT! All it takes is a little frost to damage the young plants. PS - I started mine Jan 1, that's where the 5 inch pots come in as they still have about 2 weeks left before they outgrow the pots and have to be planted in the garden. I will post some pictures this weekend. Take care, DC
