Unfortunately, the SVBs do get into most pumpkins.

But if you grow C. moschata varieties, the SVBs don't like them as much. They will get into moschatas to some degree, but moschatas also send out roots at every leaf node. Even if parts of the vine are damaged, the rest goes on.

The downside to moschatas is that most of them have buff/tan/brown skins when ripe. But if you are looking for a bright orange one for Jack-o-lanterns, I don't know if there is one.

If you're growing to eat, many of them are terrific.Seminole Pumpkin (2-3lbs) and doesn't really look like a pumpkin. But it is very tasty and darn near bulletproof. They keep on trucking throughout the heat and humidity, and shrug off disease.

Musquee de Provence is up to 20 pounds, and highly regarded for flavor. I would start that one as soon as your frost danger is past - partly because it requires ~120 days to ripen fruit, and partly because you may have issues with leaf disease in July and August. You want the vine to be big and strong before that happens.

Earwigs and pickleworms will get into the immature fruit and ruin it. (This is another reason to start it early, so the fruit is big and the skin is starting to harden before the pickleworms show up.) You can deter the earwigs by elevating the young fruit off the ground somehow.

Hope you have room - these vines will go 20" or more in every direction if healthy.

My Seminole squash this year came out pumpkin shaped and pumpkin color. They are small and have very sweet flesh. My brother's from the same batch of seeds came out the more typical shapes and colors - but frost got his before they were mature.

Does anyone have Seminole squash seeds to swap/share? As of now all my seeds are from this one plant. I could use some diversity.

I planted Burpee "Sweet Sugar Pie" last August and produced three pumpkins, one in time for a Thanksgiving pie. I did have to spray with BT frequently, and later with Daconil. Definitely had to do some work to get fruit. I live in Deltona, btw.
