Where do caterpillars go after munching?

Saturday I suddenly had green&black catepillars on my 2 rather small cassias's new leaf growth. 6. Sunday no trace except partially munched greenery. Were they all picked off by birds? No trace of anything not cassia. And how did they appear there in the first place - I never see any crawling on the long cassia trunk.

Today (Monday) I see a few white dots that could be cat eggs? But still, how did the cats leave? (So elemental...am I the only person who doesn't know this?)

After munching, of course, they go seepy ni-nite!

No, actually, if they just hatched out and now they are gone, they probably got eaten. But if they've been on the plant for long enough, they spin a cocoon and stay there to pupate, then they emerge as butterflies or moths. The cocoons are hard to notice, they usually look like a dead leaf hanging somewhere. The white dots are probably eggs that haven't hatched out yet into caterpillers.
