Plum Trees

After reading a few of the threads here about trees (peach in particular), I am wondering if my plum trees were supposed to be pruned after I planted them?
I planted a Methley and a Santa Rosa in October 2012, then a gold plum in spring 2013. They had leaves on them when I planted them, then of course lost them in the winter. Last spring we had a very wet summer--so so wet--and my plum trees lost their leaves early last year, like August. The Santa Rosa gave me one bloom last year. No fruit so far on anything, and they do not seem to have grown at all. The originals are both a little taller than I am (I'm 5.'4"), and the gold plum is much shorter than I am--maybe 5 ft.
I see buds trying to come out on the Santa Rosa, but it doesn't look like they are flowers, but only leaves again (I could be wrong). I have done nothing but cut off a few branches that were obviously out of place.
Any advice?
