Newspaper in the hole

Hi Folks,
This is not about roses, but I recently read a very old typed sheet of instructions on planting roses in Florida. It said in the hole to first place a thick layer of newspapers.

I am wondering if this might help with growing annuals. So I planted 6 Sunpatients using this technique this morning.

By the end of the season the paper should be broken down by micro-organisms, if not too thick, but in the meantime it might slow down my leaching problem (water, fertilizer, organic matter, etc.) in this sandy loam.

First a newpaper section folded into quarters, next good well-aged compost/soil, next the plant and then fill in.

Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Bob
