Simpson's Stopper

Anyone north of Orlando or in zone 9a or lower growing these in their landscapes? I love the look of them, but from everything I've read they won't tolerate getting frosted. Seemingly not even simply dying back, but completely dying. They have one or two at the Discovery Gardens about 30 minutes south of me, but the agents there say that it wouldn't do well in my neck of Lake County. It's baffling to think that a plant can thrive in one location but not in another location just a hop, skip and jump away. I mean honestly, it might be a 30 minute drive, but it's only 15 miles away as a crow flies. Granted, the Gardens are in the middle of three lakes, so that might put it into a warmer micro-climate.
