Do legumes add nitrogen while still growing in the soil?

Hey Everybody,

I have been told that adding legumes like beans as a companion plant to corn helps add nitrogen to the soil. But I thought that they only do that when they are turned over and composted. Do legumes add nitrogen while they are still alive and green? Would they help feed corn plants while still making beans themselves?
