In my experience, I only had 1 Anna apple tree in Phoenix, no pollinators and planted in clay soil, it gave tons of apples.
Now I have a Pink Lady and an heirloom, Thomas Jefferson favorite variety. The apples are on the small size and not as prolific like in other areas that I had fruit trees before.

Thanks, Silvia. What I think I'll do is go ahead and plant it in a sunny location, see how it does through the wet season. If it survives I'll get another variety at the end of the year for better pollination next year. No sense in getting another if I'm not confident this one will last. It sounds like it will fruit with no other to pollinate but will do much better if there is another kind around. This nursery grower here is an ol' timer, lived in this area forever, so I trust his knowledge about the different growing conditions around here. I had asked previously about growing fruit trees and when I told him about our soil, he said the best choice would be a pear tree, which is our least favorite fruit. He said the worst choice we could make is a peach. I know that anthracnose is a big problem here, the first year here we planted a dogwood and it was dead in less than a year.
