native pitcher plants

I really want to add some florida native pitcher plants next to my pond but I have been unable to find any place that sells them. Most of the plants seem to grow wild up in the panhandle area and I would think someone would have them for sale but no such luck. Does anyone here know where I could get some of these plants?

The ones I'm most interested in are Sarracenia flava L. (trumpet-leaf pitcher plant), S. leucophylla Raf. (white-top pitcher plant), and S. purpurea (purple flower pitcher plant) but at this point I would take any that I could find.

I see the names you are looking for listed on eBay for cheap if you buy the seeds. I typed 'pitcher plant seeds' in the Category - Yard, Garden & Outdoor Living

have tried several species of the natives but find they need a definite change of season. In 10 they languish over time . Now tropical pitchers no problem except for the high altitudes you might have some luck in 9 These are plants of collectors google the species and you will find necessary chill hours for the various types gary

Lou, I hadn't considered buying seeds instead of plants, I'll have to check out what's available!

Gary, I want to be able to plant them in bog conditions by the pond and not have to bring them in for them winter. I kill or maim far too many plants each winter by bringing them inside but I know that if I leave them outside the frost will get them. I've given up on orchids for this very reason! Since I live in zone 9A and am located in the lowest point in my area where the cold air settles in the winter I'm hoping that the natve pitcher plants will do okay in my garden. I will take your advise and read up on the plants chill hours though and try to pick the one that requires the least. I hadn't really considered chill hours for pitcher plants!

Hi Kara,

Wellspring Gardens has nine pitcher plants listed on eBay. I'm not sure if any of these are what you want or within your price range. I have had good luck ordering from Wellspring. I purchased bananas and alocasia/colocasia last spring 2012. I received small, starter plants but I knew that was what I was buying. They were healthy and inexpensive, packaged well and shipped quickly. I was very pleased.

I have purple pitchers... but I just brought them out for the summer and they are suffering right now. (they are much more purple than this, but they got sun burnt when I didn't realize the shade got left off) When they recupperate in about a month I'll be glad to send you some pups. I normally have divisions twice a year.

Thanks to TINA for getting my son started with the man eating plants - this was one of his -that ended up being my projects! LOL.
