I think it may be Medinilla (Medinilla magnifica). That is a very cool plant with beautiful pink, hanging flowers. Is that what you saw on the man's plant?

EDIT: No, the leaves aren't right. That's not it. I'm sure others will chime in.

Take photos on cell/tablet in landscape mode with the bottom of the phone to your right and you will never have orientation issues.

Another guess, until someone comes along who knows for certain: Schefflera actinophylla or something in the Schefflera genus. Red petioles are a good indication of a young S. actinophylla.

Actually I wasn't close to it, but my husband said that it had a trunk about the size of your wrist and over 6 ft tall. I don't believe this plant/tree blooms. Thanks for your imput, lty.

it does look like schefflera actinophylla - hawaiian octopus tree. and it does bloom ...

I think it is a Schefflera and it is on the exotic ( do not plant list).
