Hi Do you have much of a leaf roller problem there?? I had switched to heliconia due to the problem and as an experiment put a couple in my "marsh garden" Presto!! Not only are they growing like weeds the leaf rollers disappeared lol I like the family as there are sooo many colors and forms . That's a very nice pink!!! gary
I think this was my very first plant purchase ever (other than a house plant or two in my college days). I mail ordered them from Horne's Canna farm in 2006, as you all know me and pinks. I really wanted pink. True-pink canna were much harder to find then and so I unloaded $30, I think, to have these, as Horne's had a minimum order size, too. (This was all before much was known about the canna virus.) Pink cannas are everywhere, now, but I do still love my Maudie Malcolms. No regrets. But I remember thinking then... do people really mail plants? How does that work? It was all so new to me then, LOL!
Thanks Jane and Silvia, for the nice comments. Gary, I do have trouble with leaf rollers. You can see leaf holes from the rollers in the top picture. They also hit the red Abyssinian banana, right next to the cannas. I like heliconia, but that is a tropical plant that has not made it into my garden yet. I think it would require an awful lot of protection to make it through winter, but I would love to try one. I will keep my eye out. They don't sell them a lot in Jacksonville. I don't have anything like a marsh garden, but I do have an area down by the lake that also has canna. Those are 'Crimson Beauty'. I posted a picture last year but can't find it right now. That's nice that you found a good place for yours where they don't get gobbled up so quickly.
Hope that you are having a wonderful day! I can relate to the plant purchase that you did.:) For the leaf rollers in cannas I use diatomaceous earth, that is when I remember, otherwise I just cut them and another comes up without the leaf rollers.
I saw some pretty pink cannas when I was visiting the gardens recently
