Hi, Karalynn! He's cute, isn't he? But what I think he is, is a worm lizard. The segments around his body give him away. The worm lizard is very interesting, in that it is not a worm, not a lizard, and not a snake! It's a whole other animal, Rhineura floridana. And of course, it is completely harmless. Check out what Floridata has to say.

Marcia, thanks for the correct id and info. That would explain why I wasn't able to find it in my reptile books! It's neat that they are only found in central florida. I wonder what they eat.

Marcia - Since it is so geographically isolated here, could this be one of those "exotics" turned loose when it continued to wander out of its cage and into the shower stall?

Not from anything I've read, barrier. It's apparently a native, just with a very restricted range. Perhaps it was left behind eons ago when land masses spread apart or something. But there is nothing to indicate it doesn't belong here.

I feel bad....I found one of this when I was digging to plant a rose bush a few months ago.

I found it after I dug...and cut the end of it off. It was the weirdest looking worm I had ever seen and looks exactly like this worm-lizard.

Did I kill it? I threw dirt on it in the hopes that it was a worm that would re-generate.

Yet another critter from central Florida I have never seen :)

I am familiar with earth worms...thanks....used to dig them up to go fishing when I was a kid.

This thing looked like the above picture, sorta grey/silver pinkish in color.

This is a lizard and not a snake or worm .
It is actually quite rarely seen .
You are very lucky to have them in your yard .

An amsphorbinian?..(sp?). well, I can tell them which reptile that is not a snake or lizard and has no legs was once on the Central Plains and now only in Central Fla! Cool that you found a maximum length one, Karalynn - or that he found you.
