Perhaps it was a hibiscus that is a weeping type--LaFrance, Anderson Crepe, or H. schizopetalus? Many hibiscus have very stiff stems that wouldn't 'weep' easily. I was looking for one myself, but didn't want to pay $50 for it when I found one :)

We have a gorgeous hibiscus that seems to have the shape you want, voluntarily. It blooms a lot but not right now. See the photo in the link. They don't cost any more than other fancy hibiscus.

Hibiscus can take heavy pruning. You can shape it anyway you desire. You can't make the branches bend unless you train them or buy a different variety.

If it were mine, I'd cut out many of the lower branches and some of the inner branches opening up the bush.

Another option is to trim the taller branches and force it to grow in a shrub shape.

Since we're on the subject, do some hibiscus tend to be "leggier" than others? I have two that are nice and full with lots of branches. I planted another by the front door a few years ago, I've trimmed it down practically to the ground, but it still just sends up 3 or 4 long branches. Can it be trimmed back anytime during the year?
