Drying harvested garlic

Hi folks! I don't post often, but this time I do have a question.

There is a lot of freshly dug garlic in the garage. I've dried small amounts of earlier dug garlic in the exercise room with the fan going full blast. What I would like to do (and don't know if it is the right thing to do) is cut the top 2 feet of the foliage (and let it set outside to get rid of the smell) before I bring it inside to the exercise room to dry. Is this possible?

This has been a fun experiment and I have some big garlic bulbs to show for the effort. Next year I'm going to cut back on the number of daylilies I grow so that I can commit space within a raised bed for the garlic. This year they were scattered among the daylilies and that made it really difficult to spray for daylily rust. I covered the garlic every time and don't want to do that again!!

I would appreciate some help. Any help would help!
