If tomatoes wont work then what can I grow?

O.K. so it looks like I will not be getting tomatoes this summer. But this morning I noticed that my green pepper plant has finally set fruit. It took so long I was getting ready to throw them away. And now its got me thinking about the kinds of vegetables that do well during the summer. Does okra grow well here? And if so what else can grow in the summer. Remember that this is my first year gardening and Im still a newbie.

I am a newbie too. What I planted was in March and I planted cucumbers, eggplants(just starting to fruit), tomatoes, watermelon. What zone are you in? Soon we can start the fall garden.

You can grow okra, but it is very sensitive to nematodes. You may want to grow it in a container. I grew okra in a container once on a concrete area and the nematodes somehow found their way into the container. Nematodes love okra.

Cow peas, pidgeon peas, sweet potatoes, and non-bell peppers also grow in the summer.

I try to experiment with other things but you do that at your own risk.

Hey! If you mean dead summer what will grow in FL the answer is not a lot.. southern peas, okra, and some humid heat loving leaf veggies like Malabar spinach, amaranth, and a couple others! I have never had a problem growing my okra right in the garden and it even gets HUGE and produced more then i can use!!! I write a blog about my adventures veggie and fruit gardening in FL maybe you should check it out!!! : )

I purchased some wild florida tomato seeds from the Southern J Ranch in West Palm Beach. They are listed on craigslist under so florida. phone number is 561-312-6205. Everyone says they are about the only tomato that will produce in our heat. Can't wait to get them going. I only got a few tomatoes from the plants I planted this year, maybe were too late getting into the ground. We had just moved to Lehigh Acres in late Feb and it was early march when I got them planted. Hope these do better this fall.

Ecopal,
If you like beans the yard long beans will grow in the heat & humidity of Fla. There's purple, red, & green varieties of the yard long beans(very tasty). They will need a trellis to grow on as they are a pole bean. If you like winter squash the Seminole Pumpkin (which is a long keeper 'up to one year' winter squash) will grow all through the summer. The Seminole will need plenty of room to ramble around your yard as it has very long runners.(some people train them to grow up a tree and the squash hang from the branches)

My eggplant, everglades tomatoes, pigeon peas, okra, cubanelle peppers, wax peppers, and sweet potatoes are doing well. I have a couple of better boy toms and one cuke plant hanging on, but I doubt they will live much longer.

I have Everglades 'maters that Tom gave me, eggplant, and sweet 'taters all over the place, also peppers (banana and hot)... other stuff will grow but I don't care for it... my sweet 'taters are getting big now, dug some up yesterday... also my Haden mangoes are in full tilt and I'm starting to freeze them, I cut them in bite-size hunks and put them in sandwich bags, just enough for a small serving in each bag... then I put all those small bags in a large freezer-bag and date the bags.... also I'm getting bananas and papaya.... sally
