Mangrove question

We vacationed from Cocoa Beach to Ft. Myer's beach this past week.

They had a few good storms roll through right before we arrived.

Washed up on shore was a mangrove with several little leaves emerging from the top and a nice little nest of roots on the bottom. Had we been near the back waters I would have set it up in the roots of other mangroves and hoped for the best, as it was we were gulf side.

So, I put it in a glass of water and now I'm not sure what to do with it ? Can I try to "raise it" as a plant ? Is that even legal ? I know it's illegal to remove mangroves from their environment, but does that apply to ones washed ashore after storms ?

What would you do with the pup ?

They are a neat house plant. You can also do this with the seed pods (stem end up) Do this:

Gather a glass container and fill about half way with beach sand and fill with beach water. Place your plant or pod it that. When the water gets low add fresh water as needed.

The first time I saw this there were five leafed out pods in a bonsai like mangrove forest. As I remember that group lasted for over two years. I think I would flush and replace the sand and beach water as I could.

Thank you thonotorose. I felt like I had some kind of contraband retrieving it from the beach, but it was up beyond the high tide line and covered in white sugar sand, I thought about tossing it back into the gulf, but I reasoned that was certain death.

I'd love to somehow get it into the ground outside so that it could maybe take root, but we're not on the water so I guess that's out of the question ?

Mangroves are easy and will volunteer all over the place--- we have a huge one now in our back-yard that came on it's own some years ago...never watered, in sandy dirt next to the alley, never cared for, and quite a distance from any salt-water indeed... sally

CB Lorax,

That is a pretty cool little find! There is lots of info available on the web. See link below.

Carol

Here is a link that might be useful: Google - mangrove houseplant

RE: Mangrove question

Thank you Sally and Carol, great info ! Maybe this little guy will survive in the ground. I think it'd be great even if we can't provide it's lagoon cleansing/ habitat to the river we can still keep it growing and maybe even reproducing. There are canals and the river all within a stone's throw of the house...

You have a pup, that's how Red Mangrove propagate. The white and black propagate differently
