Caterpillars will do that - esp. 'fruit worms' or army worms - also a bird may peck & break the skin & pill bugs, slugs snails will finish it offâ¦.

Yes, I'd go out at night with a flashlight and look to see if you can find the culprit.

Could be sunscald too, it is really hot now and if you've not had rain or enough cloud cover for a few days that can happen here.

Thanks for the responses. In general, I have found peppers easy to grow, although this summer has been a challenge. Spring was almost effortless. I didn't have many bugs or other pests and no diseases.

Sorry, I just could not resist, even if we are a few months shy of Halloween ;-)
