| After years (seriously I do mean years) of working on the mailbox area I think it is done. This morning we finally replaced the You-Cant-Make-Me-Grow crape with another one. And even planted a second one to make it three in a row in the hell strip.
The last one isn't a runt, we had previously purchased and planted the far one and then found a place with the larger ones. Since the bigger ones weren't very much more we went bigger. Going bigger meant I had to dig up some plants and move them. Hopefully everything will settle in nicely. I've not really been a plant mover before - more of a plant killer and replacer. But it's good to expand my repertoire. I can hardly wait for the tree to get established and start growing. Not just for the growth, but so that I can clean it up a bit. Does anyone know how long do I need to wait before I can trim off some of the shoots and lower growth?
And here's a somewhat blurry closeup of some of the flowers.

That came out so nice! Your neighbors will be inspired to make their mailboxes look good, too. About trimming up your new crepe myrtles - I didn't know you had to wait . . . I always just barge in and do whatever I want. I'm someone will point out that's the wrong way! So now you're less of a plant killer and replacer and more of a real gardener. You should feel proud of your accomplishments. Susie

Thanks Susie! I actually am feeling pretty great about the mailbox area. I worked on the area so long, I think most of my neighbors have commented on it. Not sure if any will follow suit. Maybe someday I'll get to be one of those who can propagate a plant and pass them out to the neighbors. That would be fantastic. I'm probably being over cautious on the trimming of the crapes. But there is no way I ever want to dig them up and replant new ones. Too much work and I'm too old. Or at least I feel too old.

Good job, and good idea for your Hell strip. The Purple Showers will do well in the heat and most any amount of moisture, as well. Now you can sit back and partake in your favorite libation, lol.

You are welcome to come over to my house and dig up the two I can't kill. I just keep cutting away at them and they grow and grow.

Sadly it looks like I might have killed the guara by moving it. It's a shame as it had been doing so well. I'll have to see if I can get a replacement maybe later this week. girlsaylorz9a, I know some people have problems with the purple showers, but so far (3 years later) mine haven't spread at all. Of course, I ignore them all winter and then they spend the spring trying to recover from the neglect so that might have something to do with it. scottteng, lol that is always the way. It is way too hot for anymore digging. It is even to hot just to stand outside and think about digging.

Don't give up on your guara just yet. I had to move mine in that picture I showed ya when hubby said it was too scruffy for such a small garden. So I dug up about 8 big monster plants and planted them along the fence in the backyard. They promptly died - or so it seemed. I cut the dead branches back almost to the ground and now new growth is shooting up. Mine get plenty of water, so that maybe helps them alot. Too bad - I was just up visiting in the Orlando area and I would've loved to bring you some of these extra guara I've got. They're dying to get out of these too-small pots. But if you have a Lowe's near you, maybe they will have some on their sale rack for a nickel! Susie

Thanks for the offer Susie. I did run up to Lowes and got a new one. I have 2 that died due to transplant so I'm only going to replace one and will cut back the other one. If I'm feeling good (not overheating) I'll transplant the first one and cut it back hoping for growth next year. They should get plenty of water this summer as I baby the new crapes. That should help.
