I pulled up most of the front lawn a few years ago and planted an assortment of mostly native bushes. Much to my surprise, they're actually doing pretty well! Now I've got to figure out when to prune some, as they've outgrown the allotted space, overhang the walk, or are too leggy. I never know when to prune anything here (yep, another northerner), they always seem to be flowering, or putting out berries or something. So what I'm asking is, when is the best time to prune? Does it depend on the bush? I've got elderberry, florida privet, walter's viburnam, fire bush, and of course, some hibiscus and gardenia.
