My Scraggly Olive Tree

I have an olive tree that is probably about 3-4 years old. I don't know what variety it is, I bought it at the Green Thumb festival and it was just labeled "green olive".

I have just let this thing grow for the past few years without doing any pruning. To be honest, I don't know a lot about pruning olive trees.

Should I prune off the shoots growing out of the base of the trunk? Is an olive tree like a Laurel Oak in that, if you prune, will it spur new growth in the area that was pruned?

The tree is about 8 feet tall including the pot.

I have another Kalamata Olive that is growing into a nice, bushy canopy with a clean trunk. But this one is all scraggly.

I saw a few olive trees planted in pots in a place that I visited recently near my house.

allen - If the olive tree was mine, yes, I would clean up the trunk. In time, it will send out more low growth, but just prune it off.
