Great pictures! I just learned something new yesterday, hummers steal web silk to cement their nests together...I'm always looking for a new angle to be advocates to these great spiders.

Although I value them as insect predators, I still carry a long stick when walking through our woods, waving it in circles ahead of my path, no way do I want to have one of those bad babies on my face! They're just gonna have to build a new web when I leave.

I'm with you Rita. I gather enough web silk in my face to build a hummingbird village unless I grab a stick and wave it around me. What's amazing is that I can clear a pathway of webs, and come back and do it again an hour later.

Tom, while that might be true, both of the above have been known to catch hummingbirds in their webs. It's not a common thing, but it has happened. Those webs are big and fairly tough.

I'm with you both, nothing worse than a web in the face! I spend the next couple hours knocking invisible spiders off me and out of my air.

I love these spiders but I love my hummers more :) So, if I see their webs anywhere near my hummingbird/butterfly plants I relocate the spider and take down the web. The webs are relegated to the woods, so far I have only seen the big old grasshoppers in the webs.

A big part of being a kid in florida (at least, when i was one) is running through the woods and getting those puppies right in the faceâ¦yick!

We had the Garden Orb Weavers up in South Carolina, not sure about the Golden Silk's as I don't recall ever seeing them. The Garden Orb Weavers were kind enough to build their webs fairly out the open, making them easy to see. The Spiny Orb Weavers however...

Okay, so I had to google hummingbird caught in spider web. Yikes!
