Banana fruit

I have Nam Wa bananas, this is only the 2nd bunch- one last fall and now this one. Only 20+ bananas on the one bunch. The fruit only gets 2 to 3" long stays green for weeks then turns brown and rots off. I cut the flower end pod end off when the male flowers keep falling off when no more fruit formed. What am I doing wrong- it should be getting enough water- fertilizer maybe- 2 cups 6-6-6 around the base of the 5 stalks growing together. Too many stalks in the one area 5 or 6 full size and maybe 3 pups
Posted in the Banana forum but only one reply in 3 weeks
Thanks

RE: Banana fruit

Steve, my dwarf namwah had about 120 bananas but the plant's leaves turned brown about the time I cut the male bloom. The bananas are ripening, but are not as sweet as I remember. The other 2 plants in the ring continue to grow and look good ??

Steve I am having a similar problem on my Ice cream's You get a normal bloom and fruit then it turns grey then brown. I don't trim the flower off. I do have a larger group maybe 7 or 8 plants. I am going to thin out the number of plants next year if w don't get a hard freeze. I have nam wah and 3 other bananas that are producing fine. Maybe 7 stalks ripening in various stages. My ice creams have only produced 1 good stalk but they are pup machines.

Steve ~ It appears that fungus has gotten into the banana bunch by the cut flower end. That's the reason why I never cut the flower off. I have been growing nam wah for many years and ice cream for only about four years. Both grow very well in my area also.

Robert ~ When a banana plant becomes a "pup machine" it is caused by too much nitrogen.

I did not cut off the flower on the bunch last year and it looked and turned out the same.. I read somewhere that some think cut the flower off it gives the fruit more energy that is why I did it this year. Maybe too many stalks and not enough fertilizer ?

Steve ~ Well, I'm glad to say that I have never had a banana bunch turn brown like that. So, I'm going to only imagine what could be going wrong for you. My very first impression is that your banana plant has a fungal disease. So, what you have to do is figure out if cultural practices weakened the immune system of the plant. Too much water... Incorrect type or amount of fertilizer. Some lower quality fertilizers will burn the roots of plants. Personally I use Sunnyland 8-10-10 with some added potassium to get the last number a little higher. Some varieties of bananas are prone to fungal disease but nam wa isn't one of them.

Too many stalks can't be the cause. You should see my patch. It's 50 feet long.

If this problem persists, then I would get some new suckers from a healthy source and plant them in a different location. Be sure to dig out the old ones first. Also, remove all old trunks and leaves from your property.

I have been growing bananas for about 14 years and have never encountered this. I do not grow namwah but agree it looks like a fungal disease. Try calling your local extension office they will know if there is a problem in your area or possibly you can bring in part of the plant for them to look at.

RE: Banana fruit

Thanks for all the input. I had a big problem with the gray powdery mildew on my tomato plants this past summer and they were only 10 feet away. Sun is a premium in my yard. Looked at the bunch today and it is wasted away. So I will cut the stalk down this weekend and haul it off.

Steve, and try to dig out the roots too because that's where banana fungus likes to live. So sorry about your bananas.

RE: Banana fruit

That one is in a clump of 6 large stalks and about 4 pups
do I cut and remove all or just the one that had the fruit that rotted ?

RE: Banana fruit

Steve ~ It should be assumed that the whole area is contaminated. That's why I mentioned that it would be best if you planted the next clump in a different spot.
