Well, I'm done experimenting with tomato varieties but I am still looking for more resistant, good producing zukes, cukes and peppers so here's my updated seed list if anyone wants to try a few seeds, just drop me a line.

Boy OH Boy, Tom, you are on top of your game! I am thinking and L-o-n-g-i-n-g to start fall tomatoes, here. When are you starting your seeds...or didja already, you dog?? I turned Son-in-law in Chicago into a tomato and veggie gardening monster when he visited this spring. I sent him home with gads of seeds. He has over 100 tomato plants!! The Green Zebras are just now ripening for him and hopefully, I will get my fill when we visit in Sept.

RE: Fall veggie seeds

Tom, are you saying that all of these varieties are doing well for you or do you have any in the list that are new that you haven't tired yet?

Cindee - I've missed you, where the heck you been! Tomatoes in September, can I go with you ;-) I'm starting my seeds TODAY!

Christine - these are ALL new seeds to me save one or two. I want to share the new stuff in an effort to find things that will work here in Florida :-) There will come a day a few years down the road when I have my staples but for now if I have seed listed it's because I want to see how others do with them compared to my experience....

RE: Fall veggie seeds

ha ha...Tom, I just planted up a tray of various 'mater seeds this morning (YOUR FAULT!!!) and some Spacemaster 80 seeds. Were those cuke seeds from you or Willie? Planted some of Silvias 'mater seeds too. The Hawaiian Currants were so good from the vine...Mouth Poppin' yummy!!

Sorry haven't been around much. Been working part time and I am back in Phys Therapy (yippee) strengthening my muscles and re-learning reflexes to keep from falling. Now that I am 2-new-hips-bionic I can even ride a bike!!

RE: Fall veggie seeds

Tom, I would love to have a few each of these. I'll get back here with my seed list as soon as I can.

Dolma Kabak (Turkish summer squash)
Cucuzzi - vining squash (ECHO)
Sweet Gourmet Hybird (Burpee)
Table Dainty - vining squash (Suttons - England)
Tatume - vining squash (Victory Seeds)

Veronica - I'll pack up some seeds for you this week, drop me an email with your address.

RE: Fall veggie seeds

did anyone have good luck with tatume? i was unimpressed... got some fruit, but not worth the space. and it is NOT drought tolerant!

 o
RE: Fall veggie seeds

I've had awful luck with cucumbers and zucchini/squash, everything gets powdery mildew!!

I've tried spacemaster, straight eight, summer squash, and another pickler, not even a baby fruit before mildew gets it. Let me know what works out for you and how to avoid the powdery mildew stuff.

As for trying some of your seeds, I'd love to, I have no preference, so if you can spare any after the requests, please send some my way, I'll gladly take some mater seeds if you have any too.

I have yard long beans seeds if you're interested, one row has been enough to feed my family of four and give away some every week.

Michael, Leelee

I have the Table Dainty producing since March. No need to put the hose on that one. It is still producing wonderful squash, that can be eaten at any size with the same great flavor.

And Tom, don't forget me. You know my request...

I won't Silvia, just waiting to see if we can get the Oriental cuke seeds before sending out your seeds.

I have everyone's request but with Silvia's success with this one cuke variety I'm waiting to see if I can get packets of it so I can send them along as well.... So far I have a zillion request for Table Dainty so don't be surprised if each of you only get TWO seeds as I want to make sure everyone that asks gets a shot at this one so that over the next few years we'll have seeds from many different Florida GW'res...we all know how squash can cross-pollinate so the more folks that can provide these seeds in the future the better off we'll be.

I am saving more seeds of the Table Dainty, after we all save seeds from this variety, we will call it Florida Dainty. lol

The squash is orange already, by the time you try to get the cucumbers, I will have more seeds.

This variety can also be grown without a trellis. I had one growing that way.

Cool Silvia, I can't wait to try it.

My only problem is that it's been three weeks since we've had any appreciable rain :-( This has been a very unusual summer here, five days of drenching rain (twice), followed by long periods of drought.

Tom
Sorry to hear about your weather, here we get rain most afternoons. Of course, I can't compare to other years like you can. I think, last year was about the same.

This morning, I cut the mature table dainty, and I saw more squash coming up. It is loaded now, and is already August!
I also like to add that the oriental cucumber has a longer shelf life than any other cuke that I ever grew. I usually give them away when there is too many, but for some reason I forgot some in the other fridge, and they are still good, when the regular kind would be sort of moldy already.

Tom, when you send those varieties to the people that asked, they are going to be happy!

Hi Silvia, I received your Table Dainty seeds today, I still have about ten of the original seeds from Sutton's. If the second generation turns out as hearty as the first generation we may have to nickname it Florida Hearty ;-)

The Dolma Kabak I've sent you is also supposed to be vining so it's important that you, Christine and Michael give it a try, but fall vs. spring I have no idea about since most of the folks that have grown it here were from up north and did so in the spring/summer.

I have no idea who wants to try your oriental cuke, you're going to have to help me out with this one, so far I've only sent seeds to you, Michael, Christine, Veronica and and one or two others.

RE: Fall veggie seeds

Hi Tom

The Table Dainty variety is still loaded with squash, since March. I don't think I have seen a veggie that last so long.
I heard that when seeds are saved, they become used to the growing conditions of the place and they are more successful, let's hope that it happens with the Table Dainty. And the good thing will be that everybody that receives this variety can save seeds.

I will try your Dolma Kabak this fall and see how they do, I am also getting new varieties soon from Morocco and other places. It is going to be very interesting...I will keep you posted.

The packet of the oriental cukes don't have many seeds from what I remember. They should go fairly quick. You should try them too for the fall. Today when I was harvesting, I found one monster cucumber, and I was thinking "how did I miss that?", then, I realize that did not have the knee highs and was still good!

Maybe some other gardeners will ask for seeds, if not, I will help you distribute. That should be no problem!

RE: Fall veggie seeds

Hi Tom, Since April of this year I've been getting on gardenweb for Florida gardening and mosaic tips (stained glass and mosaic forum). I've noticed how helpful you are to everyone. It's great in a time of difficulty to find someone like you that helps so many people. I've never had a green thumb put somehow this year I managed to grow peppers. I tried tomato, corn and squash....not such good turn out. I'd like to try tomato again because both my 3 & 4 year old dauthers love them! If you can think of anything that a newbie can grow in containers that would be great. I'm located in Sunrise, Florida. Thanks again for all your help. Jen

Hi Jen,

Keep plugging at it and you'll get better. I grow everything in containers, 5 gallons for all but the beefstake type tomatoes, they have gone in 7 gallon containers but I did have success last year with the Brandy Boys in 5 gallon containers so it can be done. Lets see if someone from down that way will chime in with varieties that do well there, if not, I think you can't go wrong with several of the Cherries; Super Sweet 100, Husky Cherry Red, Sungold, and if you want different color Dr. Carolyn or Black Cherry. As far as summer squash goes I tell everybody to try Butterstick because it's fairly easy to grow and a wonderful producer.

Hi Tom

Thank you very much for the seeds, I got them today and I will put them to good use. Like always, I will post the results. And you must like the color green, I assume? lol

RE: Fall veggie seeds

Tom, I meant the green cantaloupes.

If you like honeydew, next time when you go to a Vietnamese restaurant ask for a honeydew shake with boba (pebble-size tapioca ball) and a pancake Bahn Xeo. It is usually big, good for two people as an appetizer. So good!

And if you don't like it, I will give you your money back.lol

RE: Fall veggie seeds

Tom, I'll start the Dolma Kabak seeds at the end of the month. I started the Chinese cukes and Table Dainty seeds yesterday.

Cool Christine, keep me posted on how you're doing. I can't sow until mid-September here at the earliest or the DM/PM will be very problematic due to the night temps. and humidity.
