I would not cover or try to seal the hole as you'll invariably trap moisture in there and the plant will rot away. Keep in mind that plants that tend to produce large quantities of seed are doing so to insure their survival. They will produce more seed in times of stress, so your Desert Rose might be trying to save itself by pumping out potential future offspring.

So fawnridge, I should lift it and leave an "arch" instead of trying to give it something to rest on?

Susan - don't lift it, leave it as it is. I filled one with sand around 10 years ago and shoved some large rocks up against the hole after it was filled. There are roots in the sand now, but I've put sand back in the hole several times.

Got it now fawnridge! I have some screened sugar sand I can use to fill in the hole and let it go from there. It isn't my most favorite plant (has to go into the greenhouse every winter] but the hubbie does love it and I really don't want to lose it. Thanks again for your help!
