I'm certainly no expert, but it looks like several of my plants after the Lubbers get hold of them. This time of year, they're huge and voracious. I see them at random times of the day, but if they see me coming, they hide or jump away.
I have a Begonia that is just disappearing and I can't catch the jerk that's doing it... though I have killed no less than 15 Lubbers in the past 6 days. There's an Uber-Lubber out there somewhere.
Nothing repels them. You have to catch them and kill them.
I will say, I have my best Lubber-Patrol luck in the EARLY morning hours and just before sunset.

I agree that looks similar to grasshopper damage - I believe katydids feed @ night & they're in the same family, but IME, they're not as voracious as Lubbers.

FWIW, I used to have a huge night blooming jasmine that was practically skeletonized every year by some mysterious pests I could never seem to find, tho I would see lots of very tiny black pellets that looked like some sort of caterpillar's frass.

Never solved that mystery, despite many, many searches for the culprits but the plant seemed to outgrow the damage & kept going & blooming heavily for years before it finally succumbed to what I think was crown rot.

Floridata sez it's in the nightshade family - could it be hornworms?
