Ant-lions are considedered beneficial insects since the larvae are predators that feed on mostly ants but also any other small insects that fall into their pits. Here's some more information on them.

They are called antlions because their larvae eat ants... so beneficial if you don't like ants bugging you. ;-)

Thanks for the info. I was stumped as to what was making those funny holes. I wish they would move to the other side of my house where we are having little tiny ants coming into our bathroom. I wonder if I could relocate some of them...?

Sure you can relocate them. Kids sometimes keep them as pets inside and catch ants for them. It is quite cool watching the "lion" fire sand at the ants as they try to escape....then the lion gets hold of them and they get pulled below the surface. You can even buy the "lions" online and I think sell them as well.

Bamboo_Rabbit thank you for the info. I am definitely going to try to relocate some of them. The ants (little tiny ones) are driving us nuts!
