You can grow Sea Grapes inland. The main reason you don't see many inland is that they get damaged if the temps dip into the 20's.

They are occasionally seen around Orlando. Below about 28-29F will freeze back young plants and damge older trees.

There are some at Sea World by the Key West area.

Ah. Yep, Eric, you are right. I recall them now. Usually when I'm in that area I'm too busy singing along with the Buffett songs and trying to direct the family to the next destination (my wife's direction sense is non-existent and she readily admits it). But now that I think of that area more, I remember sitting there resting my back and noting the Sea Grapes.

Thanks for the info on the cold damage, both of you. If these seeds manage to sprout I will make sure to bring in the young plants on the cold nights.

I grow them! :-) I'm not within 10 miles of the coast. I'm closer to 75. Around Land O Lakes area. Once they are a couple years old you can plant them out and just blanket them if we catch a hard freeze.
Oh, and don't forget the fruitis edible - when it turns pruple. ;-)

I'm about ten miles inland from the beach and one of my neighbors has a healthy-looking sea grape tree that has been in his front yard for more years than I can remember.

I grew up in Miami,years ago..and we made delish jelly from the grapes, now here in St Pete I have some in my yard, and in the mangroves, sometimes they will grow the grapes but they never ripen...strange...also they are not as prolific growing the grapes here...wonder why....sally

I saw them for sale at Lukas nursery in Oviedo. When I was in Jamaica they were all over the resort and the island people were eating them when purple, they said that they collect them and make juice out of them.
