Late pineapples

I can't believe it!

I have three pineapple plants flowering, now! They're about 2 weeks separated, so I stand a chance of being able to eat all of the fruit (mine, ALL MINE!) before they spoil. But talk about feast or famine!

I thought they only flowered in the spring. I assume I'll need to protect the fruit from frost?

They take a long time to ripen. Mine flower mid winter and don't ripen until just about summer.

Interesting I had 2 that flowered at the normal time and 3 more that have bloomed over the last 2 months. The cold weather normally is the trigger to make them bloom. I guess the odd winter is the cause. Yeah pineapples for Christmas.

What is the odd weather? (Have I been too caught up in the Olympics?)

Beautiful pineapple. What pineapple varieties are you growing?

Here is a link that might be useful: Indoor Pineapple Culture

RE: Late pineapples

We are growing outdoors, so we don't have the same problems indoor people have. Lowes got a big buy on gallon sugar baby last year. I put mine in the ground and it fruited this spring. I harvested a smallish fruit last month. I picked up two plants from a nursury this spring that were over-winter plants in 3 gal containers. I have no idea what variety as the were marked only as "Pineapple - protect from freezing". One produced a full sized fruit that we are eating now. The other is darker green with narrower leaves and it is fruiting now. I now have a dozen suckers in gallon pots that need to be repotted for winter.

The sugar baby was very sweet and grocery store tasting. The one we are eating now has a spicy element to it that is very enjoyable.

I have absolutely no idea what kind of pineapple I'm growing. The ones I've had flower and fruit were all planted by the previous owner of the house. The only thing I know for sure is that they were not from tops... when I dug them up to move them from under the Magnolia tree (full shade, but one flowered and fruited this spring) they were clearly cultivated as they had the "bend" and cuts I imagine you'd see on a pup removed from a momma plant.
I've got about 8 tops I've also planted over the past couple of years, all the typical grocery store Dorado.
