I would also like to point out that at this time planting an avocado in any county that has the ambrosia beetle is just asking for trouble.

There is a great discussion about avocados in the container forum. I've never been able to sprout a pit with the toothpick method, but have sprouted several pits outside this summer, just lay them on the surface.

I realize it is hit and miss growing one from seed, but I lucked out. I had a beautifully fruiting tree grown from seed, though it took 7 years. But after that it had the best tasting big sized fruit every year, so it can be done. I had to take it down because my dog started eating the fruit and it is toxic to dogs and horses. I had him to the emergency vet twice.

It is much more miss than hit with ungrafted fruit. I like to play odds in my favor. Good news your dog survived.
