. . . and here's a volunteer guara that popped up in a potted crepe myrtle. Look at the top of the pic and you can see the guara blooms are almost as tall as the white crepe myrtle next to it. (These plants are tucked away in the woods and that guara just got huge while I wasn't looking)

This Florida cranberry is a volunteer. The main volunteers in my veggie garden are cilantro and sunflowers. We have plenty of callaloo volunteers here and there. So far we have been able to keep them out of the veggie garden.

I have a nice sturdy tomato plant growing in my compost pile. I think it is a purple Cherokee.

Wow, I wish I were that lucky, every time I think I've got a cool volunteer, it turns out to be a horribly invasive pest! What great photos.

I call them "garden surprises," and yes, I do love them! We had a very nice tomato come up last spring from some scraps I threw out into a hole I was trying to fill. Got a couple of very nice tomatoes from it before the heat got it. Now, in that same spot, a red papaya plant is growing. Can't wait to see how that goes!

I dug up a plant from my old yard and had a surinam cherry tree volunteer in the pot, probably planted by a squirrel.

I never turn down free food!

Here's a volunteer that recently showed up in my yard. It is a Sea Myrtle or Groundsel Tree. As near as I can figure, a seed must have hitchhiked from the beach to my home. These grow all over the nature preserve that surrounds our regular beach but I have yet to see any growing around my area. Regardless of how it got in my yard, I like the look of them enough to have moved it from where it volunteered itself to more appropriate spot. It barely suffered any transplant shock and now seems to be much happier in its new spot.
