I can't remember the name of it, but we have one growing here in Venice. I keep wanting to say "star" something.

It looks similar to a jasmine in a way but I have searched purple jasmine with no luck.

Searching through google for 'purple star flower shrub' eventually brought me to Barleria obtusa, or Bush Violet. It seems the flowers can vary a bit in that pictures of B. obtusa show some with rounded petals and others with more pointed ones like in your picture. All have a fairly five-point star shape though and the leaves are a very close match.

Barleria sounds familiar, but who knows what kind? It's identified as an obtusa, cristata and repens on different sites.
