It is very hardy for me planted in the ground, it actually grows too big and I have to keep it trimmed. Look for a spot that drains, once established is drought tolerant, the one I have was planted about 5 years ago.

Mine are in the ground and do fine. But over the years I've replaced it 2 or 3 times.

For years I had no luck at all with rosemary, especially with the store varieties. Then I asked a neighbor with a big bush of it to let me take a clipping and that has gone crazy. However, it's a much tougher and woodier variety than the ones sold in the stores. You need to find the right variety for your area.

(Mine is in-ground and I never ever water it, just let it rely on the rain. It gets a bit groggy towards the end of the rainy season but comes back full steam once things dry out again.)

I bought a plant maybe 6 years ago from a garden center, put it in the worst sandy soil in my yard and never watered or fertilized it. Now I have a plant that's 6 ft tall and has to be hacked back to keep it from taking over. This was after a trimming.

Mine too is in horrible sandy soil. It is huge and 8 years old.

I found that drainage is crucial. I planted 2 on a hill. One died soon after and one is still going. Prior to that, I had a lot of unfortunate ends to my rosemary plants- usually from too much rain and not enough drainage.
