hmm, this name doesn't tell me anything, and nothing came up on google either. the seed came from a beanlike seed pod

Looks like Milletlia reticulata , now known as Callerya reticulata. Sometimes called Evergreen or Tropical Wisteria as it somewhat resembles wisteria but is much better behaved. It is a shrubby vine with rosy purple flowers in summer followed by bean-like pods.

Thank you for the ID. I can't find much information about this plant other than it is evergreen and not invasive. Eric, you say it is a shrubby vine, do you think I could train it up and over a pergola (above our porch) by keeping the side shoots trimmed so it won't be too shrubby?

It will twine and grow like a vine but it isn't one that just runs over everything. It will climb fine on its own.

I think this vine will be a good choice for my pergola. The structure is sturdy enough to support a woody vine.
