I'm not sure? Does the location get more shade/darkness this year? Maybe a tree nearby has gotten taller and wider and is shading them more this year? I do know Pointsettia needs at least 12-14 hours of total darkness to color up...

I placed my potted poinsettia started on (Oct.1st) in a spot that stays dark at night...no porch light, streetlight or even the moon shining on it,lol...and its just now beginning to turn red...but ever SO slowly...another 2-3 weeks before I can move it to a better location.

Have often heard that but in the past i've ignored that and they started coloring around thansgiving and were in full flower right at christmas . .lolGuess this year I'll have thanksgiving poinsettia ?? lol
They have set in the same place for 5 years though this year none of the pots were knocked over nor broken for almost the whole year .maybe they're rejoicing??lol Guess there's not much that can be done to change it?? gary

Hi Gary, I think you're right! Once they start the coloring process, there's NO turning back lol....so it does sound like you'll have some Thanksgiving Poinsettias this year. You won't be alone though I've seen them for sale at the big box stores a week before Halloween...without a doubt the earliest I've ever seen them for sale ever!

Your post made me go out and check my poinsettias. They are in the ground on the north side of the house where they only get moonlight. And yes, they are starting to turn red. Oh, Boy!
