watering while away from home

We are going to TN for about 4 days and I'm looking for suggestions on how to be sure I don't come home to dead seedlings. I could buy a cheap timer to keep my lasagna garden wet but what about the things I've started in pots on my lanai?

At the Epcot Garden show I remember seeing some kind of gel that breaks down into water but have no idea where to get it.

Any suggestions??

Check with your nearest florist. If I recall, Ace used to carry it. Forget what it's called. Good luck

*Water Grabber*, and I think you could get it at Home Depot or even Walmart in the garden section. You just soak it in water and add it to the soil.

Since the holidays are coming they might not have as much garden stuff out and you might have to order that online though.

Or you could get some of those glass things you put water in and stick in the pots, if you don't want to disturb the soil. They have them at the dollar stores and drug stores now.

Some plants of mine did fairly well when I went away placed in a tray of pebbles with water. (But I left them in zone 4)

If you're only going to be gone 4 days, I think enclosing the pots in a clear plastic bag to maintain humidity would work. Before doing so, give each pot a good drink. Allow excess water to drain away; be sure the pots are not in standing water. Then enclose in a clear plastic bag. Place in bright light, but not sun. Your seedlings should be fine.

I use large clear plastic bags which accommodate a whole tray (or more) in one bag. It's easier than individually enclosing each plant. This method has worked for me when I've been away a week.

I use the cheap timer and soaker hoses, and on the end of the soaker hose i take of the cap and add a drip system (around $20.00) this way I do not need to hand water my containers. The system is long enough to add, I think, up to 12 adapters. :)
